Senior engineers building with AI · Minneapolis

We design and build calm, durable software.

A small team that built platforms at Amazon, now helping you move faster with AI, and building it to last.

The Studio

Small by design. Senior by default.

Coniferous is a worker-owned studio of experienced engineers and product builders based in Minneapolis, MN. We value craft, clarity, and the people we work with. No fluff. No frameworks for the sake of frameworks. Just good work. We sharpen that craft on our own products, then bring it straight to yours.

Simplicity beats cleverness

People matter more than process

Well-built software should feel obvious

Small teams make better decisions

Systems should age gracefully

Meet the team

Three founders with roughly two decades building platforms at Amazon between them — a few highlights from that work:

Dan Barthell

Co-Founder & Product Manager

Dan is a product manager with nearly a decade at Amazon building and scaling logistics software used by independent trucking carriers across North America and Europe. He led the launch and growth of a carrier tracking and visibility platform that drove full-network adoption and improved operational transparency. He holds a B.A. in Classics from Gustavus Adolphus College and an MBA from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.

Jake Arntson

Co-Founder & Software Engineer

Jake is a software engineer with over 15 years of experience across the full stack — from embedded systems and Android to web applications and cloud services. He spent nine years at Amazon, rising to Principal Software Engineer, leading efforts to modernize logistics infrastructure and consolidate complex distributed systems serving critical operations worldwide. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University and an M.S. in Software Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Dylan McGuire

Co-Founder & Software Engineer

Dylan is a software engineer with over a decade of experience building production systems. He spent nine years at Amazon working in infrastructure security and logistics, where he led real-time security assessments of AWS hardware at critical manufacturing and datacenter checkpoints, and earlier was the primary developer for a freight execution application used across Amazon's Middle Mile network. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

We help teams reduce complexity and ship.

01

System simplification & migrations

Over-built systems slow every release and make people afraid to touch the code. We untangle them and consolidate down to something a small team can actually own, migrating in production the whole way, with no big-bang rewrite and no downtime.

02

Productionizing prototypes

Your prototype proved the idea. Now it has to hold up. We move it off the vibe-coding platform onto solid foundations, refactor toward clean abstractions, and add what's missing for production: monitoring, CI/CD, and end-to-end tests. Then we onboard you to Claude Code or Codex so you keep building with AI after we hand it back.

03

Custom AI-native implementations

Need something built from scratch? We ship it fast because we work AI-native, and durable because senior engineers own every decision. You get a codebase that stays cheap to change as it grows, and that you can keep extending yourself with AI, instead of depending on us forever.

How we work

Fast is the easy part.

We didn't just adopt AI-native methods. We bet our own time on them. The three of us have built several real products on one shared stack, hundreds of thousands of lines of production Rust and TypeScript, in a matter of months and at a relentless cadence. One of them, Spruce, is the tool we use for all of our own development. We built it from the ground up for shipping quality software in the age of AI. But speed isn't the point. The hard part is making it last, so the machine is built for both: a disciplined loop we run on our own machines, where fast and durable are the same thing.

High-quality AI-written code starts with a well-crafted design: we break the work down to the right granularity and plan each increment in detail before any code is written. From there AI does the building, fast, but a senior engineer is shaping all of it, reviewing every change for the right abstractions, clean structure, sound API and data-modeling decisions, and code that extends instead of duplicates. We use AI at every stage and review its work at every stage too. Its output usually looks right, which is exactly why it takes someone who knows the whole system to catch where it quietly isn't.

We ship our own software the same way we'll ship yours.

It's why we can join a project mid-flight and have production code out in week one. You work directly with the senior people who build it themselves, no junior bench and no handoff. This is how we'll build yours.

Client · Medical Device

Hardware + software for a patient-mobility device.

A Minneapolis-area medical device company needed engineering help on a rehabilitation device for patients with movement disorders. We joined mid-development and had engineers shipping within the first week — spanning the Android tablet app, backend services, device firmware, and infrastructure, including a feature-flag system for per-device control without new builds.
